What is the CIPLE A2?
The CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) A2 is the official Portuguese language proficiency certificate issued by the University of Lisbon's CAPLE examination centre. It is the language requirement for most Portuguese citizenship applications under current legislation, and it is assessed entirely in European Portuguese.
The exam is assessed in three components: reading and writing combined in one paper, listening, and speaking, covering all four language skills in European Portuguese. The whole exam runs to roughly two hours. To pass, candidates need a minimum score of 55 out of 100. The certificate is valid indefinitely and is accepted by the Portuguese Consulate General in Johannesburg for nationality applications.

The three exam components
- Leitura e Escrita · 75 minutes Reading and Writing
Reading and writing are assessed together in one paper of roughly 75 minutes. You read short texts such as notices, signs, emails, and newspaper extracts, answer questions on them, then complete a short written task like a note, message, or postcard. Preparation builds vocabulary recognition, quick comprehension, and clear, accurate writing under timed conditions.
- Compreensão Oral · 30 minutes Listening
Around 30 minutes of short audio recordings: announcements, dialogues, and everyday conversations in European Portuguese. You listen and answer the questions that follow. Preparation focuses on the accents and speech patterns typical of the CIPLE A2 recordings.
- Interacção Oral · 10 to 15 minutes Speaking
A short one-to-one conversation of around 10 to 15 minutes with an examiner on everyday topics: family, daily routines, preferences, and plans. Preparation builds the vocabulary and confidence needed to hold a natural exchange in European Portuguese within the A2 level range.
How CIPLE preparation works
Every student starts with an initial assessment to establish their current level. From there, Cláudia builds a personalised plan that maps the weeks available before your exam date to the three components, prioritising the areas where you need the most work.
Lessons are held online and follow the CIPLE A2 syllabus precisely. Materials are in European Portuguese throughout: no Brazilian vocabulary, no mixed orthographic conventions. Listening practice uses recordings in the European accent. Writing exercises mirror the format of the actual exam tasks.

Who needs to sit the CIPLE A2 exam?

How long does CIPLE A2 preparation take?

Is the exam in European or Brazilian Portuguese?
The CIPLE is a European Portuguese exam, issued by CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira) at the University of Lisbon. All preparation with Cláudia uses European Portuguese only: the pronunciation, vocabulary and spelling used in Portugal. There are no Brazilian Portuguese references in the lessons or the materials.

Where can I sit the CIPLE A2 exam in South Africa?
The CIPLE A2 is sat at examination centres recognised by CAPLE. In South Africa, candidates should contact the Consulate General of Portugal in Johannesburg for information on available exam sessions. Lessons with Cláudia are held online and include guidance on the exam registration process.

How is the CIPLE A2 scored?
The exam is marked on a scale of 0 to 100 points. The minimum pass mark is 55 points, with a minimum of 25 per cent required in each component.
